What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised Standard for Environmental Management.

How it works?

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised Standard for Environmental Management.

It sets out the policies and procedures you need to minimize the negative effects your organisation’s operations have on the environment.

ISO 14001 helps you identify your objectives and determine the processes and resources required to manage your environmental responsibilities. This is done by implementing a Environmental Management System (EMS).

Benefits of certification

  • Increased efficiency
  • Improved public profile
  • Better organisational decision-making
  • A competitive advantage over non-certified companies
  • Improved customer satisfaction
  • How does ISO 14001 do this?

You may already have a number policies and procedures in place to help manage your organisation’s environmental impact.

However, making sure that everybody is aware of your policies and that everyone follows them in the same way, can sometimes be difficult to manage.

With the ISO 14001 Standard, you will have robust framework to help you define, document, monitor, review and update your environmental management processes, ensuring they are consistently applied.

    How do I implement ISO-14001?

    • Define the context of the organisation (e.g interested parties) and determine the scope of the EMS.
    • Secure senior leadership support and establish an Environmental Policy.
    • Plan how to address risks and opportunities (with a focus on environmental aspects and compliance obligations)
    • Set environmental objectives and plan how to achieve them
    • Outline resources (people, infrastructure, etc) and documentation necessary to support the EMS.
    • Prepare emergency procedures (in the event of a serious incident)
    • Establish performance evaluation procedures (including an internal audit function).
    • Define an improvement process.

What is a Environmental Management System (EMS)?

    • An Environmental Management System, or EMS, is a set of processes, policies and records that define and describe how your organisation manages its environmental impact. A well designed EMS needs to be constructed around the specific needs of the company in question, but it is here that ISO 14001 can serve as an excellent guide as to the sorts of policies and procedures to implement.

    What does ISO 14001 cover?

    • The aim of ISO 14001 is to “provide organisations with a framework to protect the environment and respond to changing environmental conditions in balance with socio-economic needs.” In order to achieve this, the standard takes a systematic approach to environmental management that looks at the entire product/service lifecycle, from design through to disposal.

    Who needs ISO 14001?

    • ISO 14001 is perfect for any organisation, whatever their size, looking to demonstrate their ability to deliver products and services with minimal impact on the environment.
